Here are 80 facts about Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA), from 1933 to 2013, from its early beginnings, its history, the men and women who were part of its rich and glorious past, its challenges and triumphant, and ultimately, its contribution the the advancement and upliftment of architecture profession in the Philippines.

1. The PIA was founded in January 19, 1933, under the name Philippine Architects Society.

2. Juan Nakpil served as the founding president from 1933-1935, and then followed by his Vice President, Tomas Mapua in 1935.

3. In 1945, after the WWII, the PAS changed its name to Philippine Institute of Architects and Planners (PIAP) then finally, Philippine Institute of Architects.

4. The PAS traces its origin from the Academia de Ingeniera, Arquitectura y Agrimensura de Filipinas (AIAAF) founded in 1903. The AIAAF president Tomas Arguelles became one of the founding members of the Society in 1933. The Academia was the first organization for Filipino Maestro de Obras (master builders) during the early 1900.

5. The Society was established in the mansion of Juan Nakpil in Dakota, Manila.

6. During the Japanese occupation in the Philippines (1942-1945), the Society ceased its activities.

7. The first PIA convention was held at the old Club Filipino in Sta Mesa, Manila, on February 14, 1941. Juan Nakpil was replaced by another young president, Pablo Antonio.

8. Pablo Antonio was the not part of the founding members of the PAS in 1933.

9. PIA in 1950 prepared and lobbied the passing of the first Architects Law (RA 545) in 1950, while the Civil Engineers Law (RA 544) was also passed the same year. They jointly celebrated the passing of their respective law at the Manila Hotel Winter Garden.

10. American architect William Parson, the head of the Architecture Division of the Bureau of Public Works was the adviser of PAS in 1936.

11. Leandro Locsin was the youngest ever elected president in 1961, at the age of 33.

12. Juan Nakpil, PIA founder, Gold Medal of Merit Award, was conferred the first National Artist for Architecture in 1971.

13. Tomas Mapua, PIA president and gold Medalist, was the first registered architect in the country with a registration number 1 in 1921, and founded the first architecture school, the Mapua Institute of Technology in 1925.

14. Carlos Alejandro Barretto, founding member of AIAAF and PAS, was the first Filipino acknowledge architect during the American period. He was part of the first batch of Pensionado graduates in 1903.

15. PIA past president and Gold Medalist Carlos Arguelles was a retired colonel, US Army, Reconnaissance Regiment during the liberation of Manila in 1945.

16. Andres Luna de San Pedro, was the son of Filipino award winning artist Juan Luna, and aristocrat, Paz Pardo de Tavera.

17. PIA in 1960 prepared the first Architect Code as the basis of our professional fee and scope of services for the client.

18. Jose and Ramon Ma. Zaragoza was the first ever father and son Gold Medal of Merit of Awardee of 1977 and 2008 respectively.

19. Tomas and Carlos Arguelles was the first father and son members of PIA, Tomas Arguelles were a famous maestro de obras during the Spanish period and pioneer architect in 1922.

20. The first PIA provincial section was the Quezon Section in 1963.

21. The founders of the League of Philippine Architects (LPA) and the Association of Philippine Government Architects (APGA) were all members of PIA in the 1950s. And the 3 architectural organizations namely PIA, LPA and APGA founded the United Architects of the Philippines in 1975.

22. The founding members of the PIA Makati Section in 2005 were all sons/grandson of PIA founders, Francisco Nakpil (Juan Nakpil), Fernando Ocampo Jr., Pablo”Jun” Antonio Jr. and Oscar Benedict Mapua.

23. PIA releases the first Architects National Code in 1966.

24. Andres Luna de San Pedro received the first PIA Gold Medal of Merit Award in 1950, it is the first , oldest architectural and most prestigious award in the country. Since 1950, the bestowed 23 architects of this distinguished award.

25. The historic PIA Walk in 1971 became the inspiration of the Annual Alay Lakad event.

26. PIA participated the restoration the Spolarium, the award winning painting of Juna Luna in the 1960s.

27. The first international section of the PIA is the PIA Singapore Section, with its president james Miranda, established in 2012.

28. In cooperation of the Talesin office, the first architectural exhibit of Frank Lloyd Wright was held in PhilAm Life Builidng in Isaac Peral in 1961,PIA was the organizer under the leadership of Jose Ma. Zaragoza.

29. The name Philippine Architects Society was given by Carlos Barretto in 1932.

30. The first Honorary Membership Award was given to Commonwealth president Manuel Quezon, during the first convention in 1941.

31. Several international architects were bestowed the Honorary Fellowship Award like, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Louie Croft,Walter Gropius, Richard Neutra and Kenzo Tange.

32. The American Institute of Architects (AAIA) bestowed to PIA presidents the Honorary Fellows award from 1950 to 1960s, with the likes of Juan Nakpil, Jose Zaragoza, Gines Rivera, Carlos Arguelles and more.

33. In 1952, PIA became the Philippine Section of the Union de Internationale de Architectes (UIA) the International organization for architects, in 1991, the PIA seceded the membership to UAP.

34. The first PIA publication was launched in 1961 entitled “PIA Journal” with Felipe Mendoza as editor, in 1971, the second publication was release “ Krokis”

35. The first ever coffee table book of PIA was published in 2003, “ PIA 70 Years of History”, with Ernie Zarate, Ramon Zaragoza and Joel Rico as Editorial Team.

36. PIA buried the remains of Juan Luna at the San Agustin Church in 1952, under the leadership of Jose Ma. Zaragoza and Carlos Da Silva.

37. Juan Arellano, one of the most talented Filipino architects of all time served as the president of PIA in 1948.

38. The PIA Gold Medal of Merit was designed by Adolfo Benavides in 1950, and crated by El Oro engraving.

39. The first PIA fellows were Juan Nakpil, Tomas Mapua and Andres Luna in 1939, however the first College of Fellows Investiture Rite was instituted only in 1971, with Juan Nakpil as the first Chancellor.

40. The first PIA clubhouse was the Spanish mansion of Jose Zaragoza in 1952 until 1958 along R. Hidalgo in Quiapo, Manila

41. As of 2012, the PIA Sctions are La Union, Tarlac, Camanava, Quezon City, Rizal, Cavite, Makati, Iloilo, Davao, Zamboanga, Cagayan De Oro, Butuan and Singapore.

42. In 1971, during the 50 years of our architectural profession, the PIA, LPA and APGA celebrated the first 100 architect’s form 1921 to 1939.

43. Juan Nakpil was only 32 when he founded the Philippine Architects Society in 1933.

44. The first formal partnership of PIA and UAP was the Architectural Archives Philippines in 2004, with its founding chairman Robert Benedict Hermoso, FUAP and Joel Rico, FPIA.

45. In 2002, the first PIA web site, piaarchitect.com was launched during the term of Augusto Galang and headed by Alvin vega as Chairman.

46. The fist-ever lady president and Chancellor was Imeda Borromeo Cancio, FPIA in 1985

47. William Coscolluela and Rogelio Villars were given the PIA Gold Medal of Merit in 1997. The first of its kind in PIA history.

48. The first PIA convention in a luxury ship was in 1993, on board MV Mabuhay.

49. The first international convention was held in Singapore in 2008, during the term of Angelito Antonio.It was the Diamond celebration of the Institute.

50. During the centennial of AIA, the Institute present a wooden handcarved logo to AIA made of Narra in 1957.

51. The passing of the new Architects Law (RA 9266) was jointly celebrated by PIA and UAP in 2004 at the Barbaras Restaurant in Intramuros.

52. The first joint recognition of PIA Gold medal of Merit Award, UAP Likha Award and national for Architecture was entitled “Gawad Gintong Likha” in 2006, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It was the considered the most prestigious award for architecture

53. The first calendar-book was published by PIA and Boysen Paints entitled “Philippine Skycrapers” in 2006. It was subsequently followed by national Artist for Architecture, Malacanang, Palace of the people, and American Colonial Architecture in the Philippines.

54. The first student group was called Junior PIA and in 2012, the Philippine Institute of Architecture Students and Associate (PIASA) were established.

55. PIA president and Gold Medalist Juan Arellano was a renowned modernist painter.

56. The first architectural exhibit was initiated by PIA and the National Museum of the Philippines called “Philippine Architectural Gallery and Built Heritage Resource Center in 2012.

57. PIA help built the Crystal Fountain Education Center, inside the White cross Complex in San Juan City.

58. Leandro Locsin, PIA president was the only architect who received all major architectural awards in the country, PIA Gold medal of Merit, UAP Likha Award, PRC Architect of the Year, Araw ng Maynila Award, and the National Artist of the Philippines in field of Architecture.

59. Rogelio Villarosa,past president and Gold Medalist designed the PIA Center in 1997.

60. Fiipino national artist Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino received the first PIA Gold Medal of Meriti Fine Arts in 1955, followed by Carlos “ Botong “ Francisco in 1963.

61. International glass artist and architect, Ramon Orlina, became the 23rd Gold Medalist in 2012.

62. The first PIA Library and Museum was inaugurated in 2003 as part of the 70 year anniversary of the Institute.

63. In 2004, the Institute bestowed the “ 70 Distinguished Men of Service” in Intramuros.

64. Since its founding, the PIA elected 48 presidents, 39Chancellors and elevated more than 100 fellows in its roster.

65. The first permanent home of the PIA was the PIA Headquarter in Cityland, Makati in 1990.

66. The PIA co-founded the Philippine Council for the Architecture Profession (PCAP) in 2012, the council aim is to strengthen, advance and uplift the profession of architecture in the country. JPaul Octaviano, FPIA, was the founding Vice Chairman of the council.

67. The PIA together with Instituto Cervantes in 2005, presented the rare exhibit of Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi in the Philippines, at the Ayala Museum.

68. Cesar Canchela was the PIA president when the UAP was formed in 1975.

69. PIA members, Carlos Arguelles, Gabriel Formoso, AJ Luz, Francisco Fajardo, Manuel Manosa and Luis Araneta founded the Architectural Center Club in Makati, 1966.

70. The PIA in 1955, prepared the master plan fo the proposed National Capitol Complex in Quezon City, under the name PIA Collaborative.

71. PIA March was composed by well known kundiman writer Josefino Cenizal and PIA President Jose Ma. Zaragoza in 1953, It was first heard during the 20th Convention.

72. Jose Ma. Zaragoza, FPIA, was the only architect-ambassador to Sovereign Military State of Malta in 1991.

73. The PIA seal was designed by Juan Nakpil in 1935.

74. PIA in the 1970s drafted the first National Building Code.

75. The first Adolfo Benavides Award was given to Macario Pagdanagan in 1995, the Benavides award was given to PIA members of exemplary loyalty and service to the Institute.

76. The first Architectural Practice Achievement Award was given to Recio+Casas (Jose Pedro Recio and Carmelo Casas)in 1999.

77. The first international publication of the PIA was the “Ang Mundo Ni Maestro” 11 Flipino Master Builders and pioneer architects.

78. The first NATIONAL ARTIST ARCHITECTURAL MARKER was unveiled at the CCP in 2005, with PIA as the project proponent. Later, 12 structures were also place with such historic marker.

79. PIA established it own architectural school, the School of Design and Arts, along Isaac Peral (now UN Avenue) in Manila in 1941, the outbreak of WWII halted its operation.

80. The Philippine Institute of Architects is the oldest existing architectural society in the Philippines and in Asia.
